Memorial Park

"Memorial Park/Rice Military is the place to live if you want to be part of the younger, trend-setting crowd," says Roya Arfa, Texas Realtor and Relocation Specialist for Beth Wolff Realtors of Houston, and be close to all the city's best attractions. The area's upscale single-family homes and townhomes, including those in Camp Logan, Cottage Grove, Crestwood, Glen Cove, First Ward, Magnolia Grove, Memorial Heights, Rice Military Sixth Ward, West End and Woodcrest, are among the most contemporary architectural designs in Houston. Families and sports enthusiasts enjoy nearby Memorial Park and young urban professionals are drawn to the Washington Avenue party corridor with its thriving nightlife and hot dining establishments.

The recreational opportunities and beauty of Memorial Park are a wonderful benefit to local residents. Home to thousands of soldiers during World War I, Memorial Park was purchased by the city of Houston in 1924 and dedicated to the memory of the servicemen who lost their lives in the Great War. It is the largest urban park in the United States, featuring six miles of bike trails; a 2.93-mile lighted jogging circuit with exercise station, water fountains and restrooms; a quarter-mile asphalt timing track for runners; and equestrian trails, baseball diamonds, volleyball and tennis courts, croquet fields, a fitness center and playgrounds. The park's 18-hole golf course and pro shop is ranked the top municipal course in the country, and its 33-meter swimming pool can be enjoyed free of charge. Kayakers and canoers can paddle through this urban oasis to downtown Houston on the Buffalo Bayou. Picnic facilities abound, and the park and nearby Bayou Bend Collections and Gardens, Hogg Bird Sanctuary, and the Houston Arboretum and Nature Center are awash with color in the spring when Texas wildflowers are peaking, making it a favorite of local residents, fitness buffs and outdoor enthusiasts.

Besides being a haven for some of Texas' native plants and animals, Memorial Park is a vital part of Houston's culture and community. It is the site of the award-winning Bayou City Art Festival, fun runs, the Annual Bike-to-Work event and various cycling races. It is also plays host to the hundreds of trail riders who come into town on horseback for the Houston Livestock and Rodeo Show every February.
