Sugar Land is a self-contained, suburban community with beautiful, spacious homes and carefully tended landscaping that appeals to well-to-do, well-educated white-collar professionals and families, says Roya Arfa, Texas Realtor and Relocation Specialist for Beth Wolff Realtors of Houston. Only 20 miles from downtown Houston, it is one of the most affluent communities in the state of Texas. The area boasts excellent schools and first-class amenities, and, in recent years, it has earned the titles of the safest and the fittest city in Texas.

Often compared to Southern California because of its gorgeous, flowered esplanades and architectural styles, Sugar Land was built on property that was an actual sugar plantation in the mid-1800s (hence its name). Now, it is the site of the most master-planned neighborhoods in Fort Bend County, including First Colony, Avalon, Sugar Creek, Sugar Lakes, Brazos Landing, Commonwealth, Riverstone, Greatwood, River Park, Telfair and Lake Pointe Town Center, many of which offer homes on the water or bordering nature reserves. There is housing for every lifestyle—from modestly priced apartments, urban townhomes, brownstones, patio homes and semi-custom homes, to extravagant custom estates and waterfront villas.

True to its roots, the city is still the headquarters of Imperial Sugar, however, the area has attracted many large corporations from a number of industries who appreciate the small Sugarland Regional Airport and the quality of life there. Sugar Land features award-winning hike and bike trails, parks, greenbelts and dog parks; and there are many natural and manmade lakes and waterways, including the Brazos River and Oyster Creek that add to the area's beauty and appeal. There are dozens of golf courses and country clubs, a skate park, BMX bike track, an ice-skating arena, a water park, and recreational and competitive sports galore for all ages. Nearby are Brazos Bend State Park, George Observatory, and George Ranch, a working ranch with live history demonstrations.

Sugar Land attracts families because of its outstanding schools and amenities. There are 38 K-12 public schools (served by the Fort Bend, Lamar Consolidated and Windham school districts) and 18 private schools, many of which have top ratings. In addition, the University of Houston and Wharton County Junior College offer higher education opportunities at their Sugar Land branches. Residents enjoy more than 800 quality retail and fine dining locations, including national retailers at First Colony Mall and chic boutiques at Sugar Land Town Square, which hosts cultural events and festivals in its stunning plaza year round.
